Practical Move Kentucky Derby Horse Odds, History and Predictions (West Coast Runner Not Best in Derby)

Updated:

It's finally time to bet on the Kentucky Derby. In just a few short days, 20 of the world's top 3-year-old horses will participate in the 149th Run for the Roses and aim for eternal glory.

One leading contender everyone has their eyes on ahead of this race is Practical Move, who enters with a ton of positive momentum. Here's everything you need to know about this Tim Yakteen-trained colt before he vies for the 2023 Kentucky Debry crown.

Practical Move Kentucky Derby Odds and Post Position

Practical Move currently owns 10-1 odds to win the Kentucky Derby after the post positions were announced on Monday. Practical Move drew post position 10, which is a good spot to break well and be forwardly placed in the race.

Practical Move Horse Trainer and Jockey

Practical Move is trained by Tim Yakteen, an assistant for Bob Baffert for many years. Yakteen moved from Germany to Los Angeles after high school in the early 1980s. Tim's real first name is Haitham, and he's bringing his second horse to the Kentucky Derby.

Practical Joke's jockey for the 2023 Kentucky Derby is Ramon Vasquez, who guided the horse to victory in the Santa Anita Derby by a nose over Mandarin Hero and Kentucky Derby runner Skinner. Vasquez also rode Practical Joke to victory in a salty edition of the San Felipe Stakes. It's been eight years since Vazquez made his only Derby start, when his horse finished 13th.

Practical Move Race History

Practical Move has won 4-of-7 starts, including his two recent Road to the Kentucky Derby Championship Series prep races. The Practical Joke colt is considered a Derby contender in the 2023 Run for the Roses.

Practical Move Kentucky Derby Prediction and Pick

Practical Move has proven he is a horse worth being taken seriously in the Kentucky Derby. I'm not as sold, as he had to hold on in the Santa Anita Derby against lesser rivals Mandarin Hero and Skinner in a very close finish at 1 1/8 miles. Still, Practical Move should be forwardly placed and could be in the mix as the horses turn for home. Questions arise on whether he'll be able to get the added distance against stronger runners, especially with some inexperience on the side of the horse's jockey.

The most recent winners of both the Santa Anita Derby and Kentucky Derby from the West Coast include I’ll Have Another (2012), California Chrome (2014) and Triple Crown winner Justify (2018). I don't see Practical Move in that class, and he may be getting more hype than deserved.

Practical Move will take some money to win in the Derby pool. But since you have to toss some top contenders if you're keying in 2-3 horses on top for added exotic wagers, Practical Move may be one to focus on more as a potential underneath horse in trifecta and superfecta bets at best.
