Patrick Mahomes will lead his team into a Super Bowl clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in February in hopes of defending their title. The Kansas City Chiefs QB has become a superstar after being selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, taking over as the team's full-time starter in 2018 and winning the league MVP that same season, along with a Super Bowl title in 2019.
The Chiefs nailed their pick of Mahomes, who was one of 10 quarterbacks that heard their names called during the 2017 draft. However, Mahomes wasn't even the first off the board at his position.
With that in mind, let's look back at the nine players selected before Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft.
9 Players Drafted Before Patrick Mahomes
1. Myles Garrett, EDGE, Cleveland Browns
2. Mitchell Trubisky, QB, Chicago Bears
3. Solomon Thomas, EDGE, San Francisco 49ers
4. Leonard Fournette, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars
5. Corey Davis, WR, Tennessee Titans
6. Jamal Adams, Safety, New York Jets
7. Mike Williams, WR, Los Angeles Chargers
8. Christian McCaffrey, RB, Carolina Panthers
9. John Ross, WR, Cincinnati Bengals
Quarterbacks Drafted Ahead of Patrick Mahomes
Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky earned the unfortunate honor of being the only quarterback taken before Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft. If Trubisky has played like fellow first-round QBs like Mahomes or Deshaun Watson, his No. 2 overall selection would be looked at differently.
Instead, Trubisky has failed to live up to his high selection so far. He trails both Mahomes (114) and Watson (104) in passing touchdowns (64), with Watson (14,539) and Mahomes (14,152) comfortably ahead of the Bears QB (10,609) in passing yards as well.
Trubisky's play has him primed for a new team in 2021, while Mahomes just signed a whopping 10-year extension with the Chiefs.
