Pimlico Horse Racing Picks for Saturday 5/20/23

The biggest stakes races at Pimlico Race Course are this weekend in Baltimore. Included are Saturday's races leading into the $1.5 million Preakness Stakes picks.

A total of 10 stakes races on Saturday, May 20 draws fans to the track and all day mobile betting for horse racing enthusiasts. The first stakes race starts in Race 4 at 12:16 p.m. ET with Race 13 and the Preakness Stakes at 7:01 p.m. ET.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, monitor the weather, and keep an eye on the track conditions with a good chance of rain starting late afternoon.

1. White Beam and Princess Theorem, Race 7

Race 7 is the $100,000 Grade 3 Gallorette Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on the turf. The numberFire data and Guaranteed Tip Sheet both have Whitebeam (3/1) as a top win contender along with Spran Basilea (4/1) and Princess Theorem (9/2). Whitebeam is ridden by top jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. for trainer Chad Brown. She will come from the back with a late burst as she did in her US debut with the highest last race speed figure, according to GTS. Princess Theorem exits a strong edition of the Sand Springs Stakes run at Gulfstream Park in which she also tracked a slow pace and then kicked on for home to just miss the victory.

2. Hurricane Dream and Atone, Race 8

Race 8 is the $200,000 Grade 3 Dinner Party Stakes for at 1 1/8 miles on the turf. The numberFire algorithm projects Hurricane Dream (7/2) to win ahead of Atone (9/5). Atone missed badly as the beaten favorite in his last race, but won the Pegasus World Cup Turf in Jan. and top jock Tyler Gaffalione rides. Hurricane Dream will secure a dream stalking trip behind pacesetter Emmanuel (7/2) with top jockey/trainer combo Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Todd Pletcher. Hurricane Dream was very competitive in French Group races and has top turf breeding. His energy Reseve Index is exceptional, and he'll be loaded turning for home with strong stretch rider Joel Rosario running down the leaders. Rising Empire (8/1) rates out very well here while offering value.

3. Nakatomi and Al Loves Jose, Race 11

Race 11 is the $100,000 Grade 3 Maryland Sprint at 6 furlongs leading into Race 13 and the Preakness Stakes. Nakatomi (5/2) is the top pick by numberFire's data with top jockey Tyler Gaffalione riding, but Al Loves Josie (10/1) offers top value as a win contender. Nakatomi will benefit from the swift and pressured pace as well as the drop down from facing stronger runners last race. He'll be the fastest mover in the stretch chasing down pacesetter Wondrwherecraigis (4/1), who ran faster fractions in his last race. Al Loves Josie has finished in the Exacta 7 times in 9 races sprinting 6 furlongs. Put a line through that last start as it was trouble filled. He's working like a horse sitting on a big race to outperform his odds.
