Phillies GM Gives Update on Andrew Painter's Status for 2023 Season

Updated:

After plenty of questions, the Philadelphia Phillies recently provided some clarity on top prospect Andrew Painter's spring training injury. The talented 19-year-old is dealing with a UCL sprain, which has prompted fears of Tommy John surgery being necessary in the near future.

However, Phillies GM Dave Dombrowski seems much more confident in the righty's recovery.

Dombrowski told reporters he thinks, as of right now, Painter will still suit up for Philadelphia during the 2023 season. He didn't offer any kind of timeline, but his comments are still an encouraging sign.

Dombrowski wouldn't offer this stance if he thought it put too much pressure on the young ace to return too quickly. The fact the front office leader is saying anything about the potential of playing in 2023 shows he thinks it's a legit possibility.

The Philly faithful are certainly excited to see Painter take the mound in the majors after an impressive 2022 campaign. However, the club will ultimately put his long-term future at the forefront, which means exercising extreme caution until he's fully ready to throw again.
