Pete Alonso earned a cool $1 million by winning the 2019 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby on Monday night. But he also accomplished another feat by topping Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 23-22, in the final round of the competition.

Alonso amazingly almost doubled his 2019 MLB salary by being named this year's home run derby champion.

That's right, Alonso will earn $550,000 from his New York Mets' salary in 2019 and he gets $1 million from the derby prize.

While Alonso might have looked like the underdog heading into the final against Guerrero Jr., the man nicknamed the Polar Bear was the favorite according to FanDuel Sportsbook just prior to the annual All-Star event.

It took Alonso hitting three walk-off home runs in order to win the competition, but it was his opponent in the finals, Vlad Jr., who arguably won the night. Guerrero broke Josh Hamilton's then-record 28-homer round with 29 in his first-round matchup with Matt Chapman. And he topped Joc Pederson in his semifinal, 40-39, in the highest scoring head-to-head matchup in home run derby history.

Guerroro also hit the most home runs on the night, with 91, as well as the longest home run of the night, at a whopping 488 feet.

And it wasn't just the players in the competition that knew how much the $1 million prize meant to the players. Alonso's Mets' teammate Noah Syndergaard tweeted, "Doubled your salary tonight" minutes after his first baseman was named champion.

There were actually three players that had the chance to almost double their 2019 MLB salary – the two finalists and Josh Bell, of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

A much richer Alonso will be on the national stage again tonight as he makes his first appearance in the MLB All-Star Game. And if Alonso is looking for a new nickname, the $1 Million Man could work.
