San Diego Padres fans were shocked when it was announced that star outfielder Juan Soto was scratched ahead of Tuesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians. The 23-year-old was absent due to back tightness, leaving his status going forward up in the air.
MLB.com's AJ Cassavell reports that Soto's "back flared up on him in the cage just before the game." He was hoping to pinch-hit at some point but didn't feel well enough to do so. Now, it's looking like he could miss more time, leaving fans even more concerned.
Juan Soto Injury Update
Cassavell also reports that Padres manager Bob Melvin said that "it's unlikely" for Soto to suit up in the finale against the Guardians on Wednesday. While that's disappointing to hear, it makes sense. The Padres have a day off on Thursday, giving Soto an extra day to get back to normal.
After the biggest deal of the MLB trade deadline, the Soto era in San Diego has had its ups and downs. On one hand, the Padres' 8-11 record since Aug. 3 is quite underwhelming. On the other, Soto is batting .286 in 18 games since donning a Padres jersey, recording two home runs, four RBIs and 17 walks to 11 strikeouts.
Hopefully Soto doesn't miss too much time. The Padres currently occupy the final Wild Card spot in the National League but are only 1.5 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers. Getting a full-strength Soto back will certainly help them create a big difference in the standings.
