Nine Mets Officially Listed as Free Agents

Updated:

The 2022 MLB season has come to a conclusion, meaning front offices around the league are now going to start shifting attention to offseason free agents. 131 players were officially declared as free agents on Sunday, including nine New York Mets pros that made a pronounced impact this past year.

New York Mets Free Agency

The one Mets free agent that is going to draw interest from almost every team in the league is reliever Edwin Diaz. Diaz shined in 2022, logging a ridiculous 1.31 ERA and 0.90 WHIP across 61 games. He earned his second All-Star bid as well and posted the fourth-most saves in the National League (32).

Diaz isn't the only member of the bullpen set to hit the open market, though. Seth Lugo is now longer under contract after finishing with an ERA under 3.70 for the fourth time in the last five years. Neither is Adam Ottavino, who struck out 79 batters in 65.2 innings pitched as the go-to option in the eighth.

The Mets are in line to lose just one hitter from the lineup, but it's a big one. Leadoff man Brandon Nimmo is a free agent after spending the first seven seasons of his career in New York. The 29-year-old slashed .274/.367/.433 to go along with 102 runs scored, 16 home runs and 7 triples in 2022.

The rest of the Mets' free agents include outfielder Tyler Naquin as well as relievers Trevor May, Joely Rodriguez, Tommy Hunter and Trevor Williams. It's safe to say the Mets' front office has some tough decisions to make in order to put this team in position to win the NL East for the first time since 2015.

For now, the Mets have odds set at +1000 to win the 2023 World Series, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
