Nick Herbig Scouting Report
Herbig signed with Wisconsin as a four-star recruit and started all seven games during his freshman season, logging 26 total tackles (6.0 for loss) and 1.0 sacks. He stepped up his game during the 2021 season by tallying 61 total tackles (14.5 for loss), 9.0 sacks and 4 pass breakups across 13 games.
The Hawaii native was named an All-Big Ten honorable mention for his efforts that season and was then named a first-team All-Big Ten player in 2022. Herbig racked up 47 total tackles (15.5 for loss), 11.0 sacks, 2 pass breakups and 2 forced fumbles on one of the conference's best defensive units.
Highlighted strengths of Herbig's game revolve around his non-stop motor. Herbig goes all out with every snap of the football and regularly chased ball carriers down from behind in college. He has also been praised for the power and pop he displays in his hands when shedding blockers of any sort.
Herbig is now a prospect without flaws, though, as he is much smaller than the typical NFL edge rusher. However, he hardly dropped back into coverage in college and that obviously hurts his upside as a linebacker. Nevertheless, the raw athleticism Herbig possesses makes him an intriguing option.
Nick Herbig NFL Draft Prediction
Unlocking Herbig's potential will come down to whether or not a coaching staff can help him translate the way he shed blockers at the collegiate level to the NFL level. Success in that venture would help provide a rather safe floor for a player with an obviously high ceiling as a productive pass rusher.
As for which team would be the best fit for Herbig, the Browns stick out as a landing spot. Cleveland finished tied for the fifth-fewest sacks in the NFL last season (24.0) and could immediately bring in Herbig in obvious pass situations. That would give him a chance to show off his arsenal of moves.
Herbig could also fill a role as a special teams player and would provide defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz with a player he can mess around with in different schemes. Finding upside is what the draft is all about, which makes the idea of using a fourth or fifth-round pick here right up Cleveland's alley.
Prediction: Cleveland Browns (Round 4, 126th overall)
