The Islanders finished the 2022-23 NHL regular season with a 42-31-9 record, which earned them the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Center Brock Nelson led the way for New York, recording team highs in goals (36) and assists (39) while playing all 82 games. The Islanders' most recent playoff appearance was in 2021, when that squad fell in the conference finals to the eventual champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

Who Are the Islanders Playing in the 2023 Playoffs?

As the first wild card team, the Islanders will play the Hurricanes -- who posted the second-best record among east division winners -- in the first round of the NHL Playoffs. This will be a typical best-of-seven series that follows the 2-2-1-1-1 format. That means the better seed (Carolina) will host Games 1 and 2, plus Games 5 and 7 if those are necessary. The worse seed (New York) hosts Games 3 and 4, plus Game 6 if that is necessary.

Looking ahead, if the Islanders win this series and advance, they would face either the 2-seed New Jersey Devils or the 3-seed New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
