New Mexico vs LSU Prediction & Pick

This is a classic sandwich spot for LSU coming off a big 31-16 underdog win against MS State last week and with a huge game against Auburn on deck for next week. Clearly the Tigers can blow out the Lobos, but the New Mexico defense is playing better again for the second straight season under third-year coach Danny Gonzales.

Well, it's actually defensive coordinator Rocky Long that is making the difference, and the longtime San Diego State head coach and top defensive mind is making his presence felt more than ever thus far in 2022. New Mexico blanked a weak FCS Maine team before falling to Boise State, but the Lobos' defense still held the Broncos to 318 yards. Last week, New Mexico beat UTEP by 17 as a home underdog while the defense forced seven turnovers.

But against two FBS opponents, the Lobos' offense managed just 300 yards last week and 123 total yards against Boise State. The New Mexico defense has allowed just 230 yards and 14 points per game thus far. LSU will certainly surpass those numbers with relative ease here, but the Tigers have now played two emotional games after starting the season with a wild 24-23 defeat to Florida State.

Final Score Prediction: LSU: 34 | New Mexico: 6

New Mexico vs LSU Best Bet

We're not interested in laying more than 4 touchdowns with LSU in a clear letdown and look-ahead situation. The Tigers' offensive line is rated among the worst in the SEC, but their defensive front is among the best. Still, LSU had a perfectly balanced offense at nearly 210 yards both rushing and passing last week vs tough Mississippi State. Tigers QB Jayden Daniels led the team in rushing last week, and he's run for 225 yards and 2 TDs while passing for 556 yards and 6 TDs this season.

The New Mexico offense will struggle to move the ball, making them tough to bet. Counting on the Lobos' defense to be well-coached and compete enough again to hit the Under makes sense, however.

Bet: Under 45.5 (-110)
