3 Most Likely Dalton Schultz Free Agent Destinations

The start of the NFL's new league year is only one week away and teams are already starting to figure out which free agents should be targeted. This year's tight end class includes Dalton Schultz, who racked up 577 yards and 5 touchdowns on 57 receptions (89 targets) across 15 games in 2022.

Schultz has developed into one of the best pass-catching TEs in the NFL since entering as a fourth-round draft pick with the Dallas Cowboys in 2018. He enters free agency in the prime of his career at 26 years of age, too. With that in mind, here are three of the most likely landing spots for Schultz.

1. Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys traded wide receiver Amari Cooper last offseason in order to free up cap space to keep younger weapons around. Weapons like Dalton Schultz. Dallas' front office has shown in the past that it wants Schultz to stick around as it paid him $10.9 million on the franchise tag last season. It makes sense as the Stanford product has become one of quarterback Dak Prescott's favorite targets. Schultz tallied 122 yards and 3 touchdowns on 12 receptions (18 targets) across two playoff games for Dallas in 2022. That is production the Cowboys will have a hard time replacing through a different free agent or early draft pick.

2. Houston Texans

If Schultz is unable to come to an agreement with the Cowboys, the Texans line up as a possible landing spot. Houston is stuck in the middle of a rebuild and have the fourth-most cap space available in the NFL ($41.9 million). The expectation is that the front office is targeting a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft as well. Adding a reliable safety blanket to help that QB adjust to the league and revamp the offense would be a smart move. Schultz has averaged 41.2 receiving yards per game over the last three seasons and has knack for hauling in contested catches. He could be the red zone threat that the Texans are missing right now.

3. Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers seemingly have a roster ready to compete for an AFC West title right now with quarterback Justin Herbert and safety Derwin James leading the way. The team is not in the best cap space situation, though, which makes veteran TE Gerald Everett a likely cut candidate. LA would have a hole to fill and Schultz may take a lesser deal to reunite with former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore in the City of Angels. Moore knows how to build an offense that focuses on Schultz's strengths. Schultz has scored 17 touchdowns in his last three seasons (48 games), which is notable as Chargers' TEs saw 27 red zone targets last season.
