MLB Announces Umpire Assignment for ALCS

MLB Announces Umpire Assignment for ALCS

Updated:

After a couple of thrilling opening rounds, the stage is still not set for the American League Championship Series (ALCS). The Houston Astros punched their ticket over the weekend, but the Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees are still waiting on that win-or-go-home Game 5.

Either way, the Astros are ready for a chance to earn a trip to the 2022 World Series and Game 1 kicks off on Wednesday night.

On Tuesday, the MLB announced the umpiring crew for the best-of-7 ALCS round.

ALCS Umpires

Astros insider Chandler Rome tweeted out a graphic of the umpires assigned to this series. It's a six-man crew, as is customary in MLB postseason matchups, with umpires situated down the foul lines in both left and right field. The following is a list of Game 1 posts.

HP: Mike Muchlinski
1B: Alfonso Marquez (Crew Chief)
2B: Adrian Johnson
3B: Vic Carapazza
LF: Chris Guccione
RF: Chris Conroy
Reserve: D.J. Reyburn

The graphic also indicates which umpires will be behind home plate during the series.

Home Plate:
Game 1: Mike Muchlinski
Game 2: D.J. Reyburn
Game 3: Alfonso Marquez
Game 4: Adrian Johnson
Game 5: Vic Carapazza
Game 6: Chris Guccione
Game 7: Chris Conroy

Game 1 kicks off with a somewhat questionable option behind the plate, according to Umpire Scorecards' grading system. Mike Muchlinski rates in just the 24th percentile of all recorded umpires (in terms of accuracy). He's also just 45th percentile of consistency.

Game 2's D.J. Reyburn rates similarly in the 27th percentile of accuracy and 55th percentile in consistency. Game 3's Alfonso Marquez is in the 58th percentile of accuracy while Game 4's Adrian Johnson sits in the 22nd percentile. Vic Carapazza is the highest rated of this crew at the 68th percentile.

It'll be interesting to see if any of these umpires are forced to make a dramatic call.
