Mets Honor Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina With Classy Pregame Gesture

Updated:

Before the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets squared off at Citi Field on Thursday, the hometown team decided to honors two of the visiting club's most respected players: Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina.

The dynamic duo announced at the start of the season that the 2022 MLB campaign would be their last, leading to the Mets hosting a pre-game ceremony for Pujols and Molina. They had a nice tribute on the jumbotron before announcing donations to each player's respective charity

Home teams aren't obligated to honor visiting players, even if they're on a retirement tour, which is why the Mets' gesture was nothing short of classy.

Although he didn't play them often, Pujols did some damage to the Mets over the course of his 22-season career. He's faced off against them 78 times, recording 23 home runs, 68 RBIs and a .309/.392/1.004 slash line in 301 at-bats.

Molina has also fared well against the Mets, turning 352 ABs in 97 career meetings into 3 HRs and 28 RBIs, while his .307 batting average against New York is the fifth-best of the 29 teams he's faced.

The Cardinals have already lost two of their three games so far against the Mets in this four-game series. Molina and Pujols rekindling their above magic would go a long way in helping St. Louis split things before the club travels to Pittsburgh on Friday.
