The New York Yankees made some news on Thursday when they signed three-time MLB All-Star Matt Carpenter to a one-year contract. After spending the previous 11 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, the veteran infielder was forced to lose something when joining the Yankees: his beard.

After the Yankees' 7-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, Carpenter, who's now rocking a mustache, had an insane story to share about his beard involving his two young children.

Carpenter told reporters that his children, who are five and six, had never seen him without his signature beard. He added that his kids didn't recognize him when he stepped out of the bathroom with only a mustache and that the situation is "a little different."

Beards were first banned by the Yankees when the late George Steinbrenner introduced the rule in 1973. Steinbrenner eventually passed away in 2010, but the club has opted to continue the tradition in his honor, even if some think it's a bit archaic in 2022.

The hope is that, by joining a contender like the Yankees, Carpenter can rekindle some magic he had in previous seasons. His play has declined in recent years, proven by him batting .186 and .196 in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Carpenter did record two runs and a walk in four plate appearances in his debut on Thursday night, so it'll be interesting to see how he builds off that when the Yankees face the Rays again on Friday.
