Marlins Get Great Pablo Lopez Injury Update

Updated:

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez exited Friday's 7-4 victory over the Houston Astros after a comebacker hit his wrist during the fifth inning. He's been one of his team's best pitchers this season, so it's understandable that Marlins fans have been holding their breath for an update.

Fortunately, it doesn't seem like there's much reason to worry. X-rays have revealed that Lopez has escaped the worst-case scenario and is only dealing with a wrist contusion. There's no doubt that the Marlins faithful are breathing a sigh of relief.

Pablo Lopez Injury Update

Lopez was looking solid as usual before his injury knocked him out of Friday's contest, giving two runs on six hits while striking out five batters and issuing two walks in 4.1 innings pitched.

The initial belief is that Lopez is only going to be day-to-day and that there's a decent chance that he could make his next start, which would be a road game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. He's 2-1 with a 3.16 ERA in seven career starts against the Phillies.

After NL Cy Young favorite Sandy Alcantara, Lopez has been his team's next-best pitcher during the 2022 MLB season. He owns a 4-2 record through 12 starts — just two victories away from his career-high — while his 2.30 ERA and 1.024 WHIP are personal bests.

Pablo Lopez NL Cy Young Odds

Assuming he doesn't miss too much time, Lopez shouldn't have an issue making his own case to win the 2022 NL Cy Young award. His +1500 odds to win it on FanDuel Sportsbook put him in a three-way tie with the Atlanta Braves' Max Fried and Phillies' Zack Wheeler for No. 4 on the odds list.
