San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado is regarded as one of the best defensive players in baseball. He's already won two Gold Glove awards in his 11-year career, and his elite fielding is a big reason why the Padres gave him a 10-year, $300 million contract before the 2019 season.

Machado will not be adding another Gold Glove to his trophy case this year, however, as he was not named one of the three finalists for the National League Gold Glove Award at third base.

Machado's omission is surprising considering the strong season he had with the leather this year. He ranked third in the NL in both fielding percentage (.966) and putouts (93) at the hot corner. His defense was also worth 8 outs above average and 6 runs above average, according to FanGraphs.

Perhaps more importantly, Machado anchored the left side of San Diego's infield without Fernando Tatis Jr. at shortstop, who missed the entire season due to injury and a PED suspension. Without Tatis by his side, Machado had to cover more ground and make more plays than usual.

Unfortunately for Machado, he's not the only slick-fielding third baseman in the NL. Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals, Ke'Bryan Hayes of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Ryan McMahon of the Colorado Rockies were named as finalists over him. Arenado has won nine straight Gold Gloves and has already established himself as one of the greatest defensive third baseman of all time.

Machado probably isn't thinking too much about an individual award right now, though, as he's more focused on helping San Diego win the World Series. The Padres are preparing for Game 3 of the NLCS against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday after splitting the first two games in San Diego. The Padres are -116 moneyline favorites to win Game 3 on FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds and have -110 odds to win the NLCS, while their World Series odds currently stand at +370.
