The 2022 MLB playoffs race is heating up in the final weeks of the season. While those on the bubble duke it out for a spot in the postseason, some teams are already looking ahead to 2023 after being eliminated from contention.

As the playoff picture becomes a little clearer, here's everything you need to know about the participants in the 2022 MLB postseason.

MLB Teams in the Playoffs 2022

Currently, six teams have officially punched their ticket to the playoffs. The Houston Astros and Cleveland Guardians both clinched their respective division titles. Houston is poised to finish the year with the best record in the American League. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in each league will automatic spots in the ALDS, bypassing the expanded Wild Card round.

Additionally, the New York Yankees secured a postseason berth and are just one win away from clinching the AL East (as of Monday, Sept. 26).

In the NL, the Los Angeles Dodgers are currently the only other MLB team that's clinched their division. They'll be joined the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves in the playoffs. Those clubs are still battling to determine the eventual winner of the NL East pennant.

The current Wild Card leaders in the AL are the Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners. The Baltimore Orioles sit 5.0 games back of the Mariners for the final WC spot, as of writing on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

The current Wild Card leaders in the NL are the Braves, San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies. The Milwaukee Brewers, 2.5 games back of the Phillies, remain in serious contention for the final spot.

Five AL teams have already been eliminated from playoff contention. They are the Kansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics. Oakland currently owns the worst record in the American League at 54-94.

Meanwhile, six NL teams have also been eliminated from earning a postseason spot. They are the Miami Marlins, Washington Nationals, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies. Washington currently has the worst record in the National League at 51-97.
