List of Kansas City Chiefs' Full Coaching Staff Ahead of 2023 Super Bowl
For the third time in four years, the Kansas City Chiefs are headed back to the Super Bowl. While much of the credit goes to the stars on the field like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, the Chiefs wouldn't be here without their talented coaching staff, either.
Here's everything you need to know about Kansas City's coaching group before the Super Bowl.
Who is the Chiefs Head Coach?
Andy Reid is the current head coach of the Chiefs. This is his 10th season as Kansas City's head coach dating back to 2013, three of which have produced Super Bowl appearances. He led the Chiefs to a championship during the 2019 season.
Prior to joining Kansas City, Reid was head coach of the opposing Philadelphia Eagles. He helmed the Eagles from 1999-2012, leading the team to one Super Bowl appearance in 2004. Philly lost that Super Bowl, unfortunately, so Reid's record is 1-2 in the big game.
Reid has a reputation as one of the best offensive coaches in the NFL, although he has received criticism at times for questionable clock management and use of timeouts.
Who is the Chiefs Offensive Coordinator?
The Chiefs' offensive coordinator in the Super Bowl is Eric Bieniemy. Bieniemy has been in charge of Kansas City's offense since 2018, which is the same year that Mahomes broke out in his first season as a starter.
The Chiefs have consistently had one of the best offenses in the NFL under Bieniemy's watch. That was true again in 2022, when Kansas City led the league in both points and yards per game.
Bieniemy, 53, previously played in the NFL as a running back from 1991-1999, playing for Reid with the Eagles during his final season. Before being promoted to offensive coordinator, he was the Chiefs' running back coach from 2013-2017.
Who is the Chiefs Defensive Coordinator?
The Chiefs' defensive coordinator in the Super Bowl is Steve Spagnuolo. He has been the team's DC since 2019.
Spagnuolo has a long relationship with Reid dating back to their time with the Eagles. Reid hired him as a defensive assistant coach for Philadelphia in 1999 and continued working with him through 2006, sparking the latter's lengthy NFL coaching career.
Spagnuolo was reunited with Reid in 2019 after stints with the New York Giants, St. Louis Rams, New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens. While the Chiefs are known as more of an offense-first team, their defense has been generally solid under Spagnuolo, ranking 16th in points allowed and 11th in yards allowed this year.
