King Russell Kentucky Derby Horse Alternate Odds, History and Predictions (Fade Unlikely Entrant)

Updated:

It's finally time for Kentucky Derby betting. In just a few short days, 20 of the world's best horses will participate in the 149th Run for the Roses and aim for eternal glory.

One of the alternate horses for this year's race is King Russell. Here's everything you need to know about this Kentucky Derby alternate before he potentially vies for the 2023 crown.

King Russell Kentucky Derby Odds and Post Position

King Russell doesn't have any odds on him at the moment due to his status as an alternate participant. The talented colt would find his way into the race should any of the top 20 entries be pulled from the event, whether that's due to a trainer's choice or a potential drug test.

King Russell's pole position will be determined by the horse that he would potentially be replacing.

King Russell Horse Trainer and Jockey

Cyclone Mischief is trained by Ron Moquett. He's been training for over 26 years and has 947 victories and over $37 million in earnings to his name. He's never produced a Kentucky Derby winner, though.

If he participates in the race, King Russell's jockey will likely be Rafael Bejarano. The Peruvian racer has entered the Kentucky Derby 11 times over his career with his best performance coming when he rode Papa Clem to a fourth-place finish in 2009.

King Russell Race History

King Russell has a career record of two starts without a win, however, he's finished in second once. That second-place showing occurred at Oaklawn Park on April 1.

King Russell Kentucky Derby Prediction and Pick

I wouldn't bother wagering much (if anything) on King Russell at the Kentucky Derby. While he shows promise, the trainer/jockey duo of Moquett and Bejarano doesn't provide much optimism. If he even makes the race, King Russell will likely be a long shot to win. In other words, fade the gray colt.
