The Road to the Kentucky Derby continues and the biggest point races of the Championship Series start March 25. The $1 Million UAE Derby at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai is an early start for those watching and wagering in the U.S. The UAE Derby is followed by the $12 million Dubai World Cup on Saturday.

The Group 1 race awards the top 5 finishers Kentucky Derby points (100-40-30-20-10). At the completion of all the Kentucky Derby points races, the top 20 points leaders on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard earn a spot at the starting gate for the May 6 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

UAE Derby Pick

U.S. Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Doug O’Neill sends both Carnival winners Tall Boy (10/1) and Ah Jeez (12/1). out for a shot in the UAE Derby. Tall Boy was a game-winner at the UAE 2000 Guineas (G3) and Ah Jeez won the 7-furlong Al Karama Stakes.

Three-time UAE Derby-winning trainer Aidan O’Brien sends out the favorite Cairo (5/2), who won the Patten Stakes three weeks ago for his third win in his last four starts. Cairo will be the most heavily bet horse, as he is expected to run well along the front end and able to handle the added distance.

Runners from five countries are represented in the 2023 UAE Derby. Local runners include longshots Mr Raj (20/1) and Lahresh (30/1) along with Go Soldier Go (15/1), who has won his last two starts this year over this track along with a runner-up finish in Jan.

The Japanese trio of contenders includes Dura Erede (6/1), Goraiko (8/1) and Derma Sotogake (10/1). Dura Erede won his last race in the Hopeful Stakes in Dec. Derma Sotogake won three straight races to close 2022, including the first leg of the Japanese Road to the Kentucky Derby in Dec. Derma Sotogake won the Zennippon Nisai in Dec. with a late rush past third-place finisher Perriere (15/1), who went on to win the second leg of Japan's Derby prep. Sotogake finished third in the Saudi Derby in January and has beaten another Japanese runner Coninuar (15/1) twice. Dermaa Sotogake is sired by Mind Your Biscuit, a multiple Group 1 winner in Dubai.

Bob Baffert trainee Worcester (5/1) is still a maiden through three starts and leads the American contingent. Worcester finished third in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes.
