Robert B. Lewis 2023 Field, Odds and Picks

Updated:

The $200,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita is a Grade 3 race for 3-year-olds and a key Southern California prep race on the Kentucky Derby trail.

Unfortunately, just four horses are entered this year, which is a disappointment for racing fans. The meet's leading trainer Bob Baffert also trains all four horses. Since Baffert is banned from participating at Churchill Downs tracks and the Kentucky Derby for the alleged drugging of Medina Spirit at the 2021 Kentucky Derby, this year's 2023 Robert B. Lewis Stakes will not award Derby points (20-8-6-4-2), since all four runners are under his care.

The Robert B. Lewis headlines the Feb. 4 card that includes three other graded stakes on the 10-race card and a big Rainbow Pick 6 jackpot.

FanDuel Racing has you covered for the biggest racing days and events. Saturday's Robert B. Lewis Stakes is Race 3, and the 1 1/16 mile Grade 3 event is one to watch with some of these runners also returning for the March 4 San Felipe and April 8 Santa Anita Derby on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Robert B. Lewis Pick

While there is a limited field and no value in betting on the winner of the race, Newgate can take this after finishing runner-up in his two recent Grade 3 races. He posted a career-best 102 speed figure last month in the Sham Stakes and just missed by a neck coming from off the pace while finishing in front of the favorite going 1 mile. Newgate was an $850,000 purchase at the 2021 Keeneland September yearling sale, so expect the high-priced son of Into Mischief to improve as he gets stronger and adds more distance.

Pick: Newgate (8/5)
