The Road to the Kentucky Derby continues with the final points race Saturday at Keeneland with the 1 1/16 mile Lexington Stakes.

The Grade 3 race not only awards Kentucky Derby points to the top 5 finishers (20-8-6-4-2), but it may impact the 2023 Kentuck Derby Odds for those horses. As one of the designated Kentucky Derby points races, a strong performance in this event can improve a horse's odds of making it to the starting gate for the May 6th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The top 20 horses on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, based on their point totals earned in these designated races, will have the opportunity to be 2023 Kentucky Derby contenders and potentially claim the title of champion.

Lexington Stakes Picks

Louisiana Derby runner-up Disarm has a chance to use the race as a last-bounce springboard to the Kentucky Derby. Disarm is a son of the great Gun Runner for trainer Steve Asmussen, and he has 40 points on the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" leaderboard. A first, second or third-place finish moves Disarm ahead of Louisiana Derby third-place finisher Jace's Road for the last spot in the 20-horse Run for the Roses. Disarm has finished in-the-money in all four career starts. He paid out a nice $2 exacta of $94.60 in his second-place finish behind winner Kingsbarns in the Louisiana Derby, which was his stakes debut.

Empirestrikesfast is by Empire Maker, who won the Belmont Stakes, Wood Memorial and Florida Derby, and finished runner-up in the 2003 Kentucky Derby. Empirestrikesfast makes just his second start after a most impressive debut maiden win, going two turns and posting a 101-speed figure for trainer Bill Mott. The gelding beat Dreamlike in that Allowance race last month, and Dreamlike came back to finish third in last weekend’s Wood Memorial. Empirestrikesfirst will be pointed towards the Belmont Stakes, but he's a strong win contender in the Lexington Stakes.

Arabian Lion is a son of Triple Crown winner Justify. He'll try to press the pace with a good break and is a win contender along with Empirestrikesfast, according to Guaranteed Tip Sheet.

First Mission and longshot Denington are also horses to use underneath in exacta and trifecta wagering.
