Kentucky Derby Prep Jeff Ruby Steaks 2023 Field, Odds and Picks for Saturday 3/25/23

Updated:

The Road to the Kentucky Derby continues and the biggest point races of the Championship Series start March 25. The $700,000 Jeff Ruby Stakes at Turfway Park in Kentucky will be one to watch, along with the weather. A 100% chance of rain Friday night and a 40% chance Saturday along with 25+ MPH winds could make for tougher conditions on the All Weather Track at Turfway.

The Grade 3 race awards the top 5 finishers Kentucky Derby points (100-40-30-20-10). At the completion of all the Kentucky Derby points races, the top 20 points leaders on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard earn a spot at the starting gate for the May 6 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

The winner of the 1 1/8 mile Jeff Ruby Steaks will earn enough points to qualify for the 1 1/4 mile Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs on May 6. The runner-up will likely be in the Kentucky Derby as well.

Jeff Ruby Pick

We have a full field of 12 runners and the most competitive Championship Series race yet. Six runners will take some serious betting action led by the favorite Major Dude (5/2) who tries the synthetic surface for the first time. Leading win contenders include Event Detail (15/1), Funtastic Again (6/1), Congruent (5/1), Two Phil's (7/2) and Wadsworth (8/1).

Congruent (5/1) is a son of Tapit who has been working and racing at Gulfstream. He did win a minor stakes at Turfway just three weeks ago with a 100 speed figure (ESF) over this synthetic surface. He was last of 12 at the half-mile pole before kicking into gear and winning by more than 3-lengths over Scoobie Quando (15/1). Two Phil's (7/2) has finished in the money in three straight graded stakes with a win and also third place in the Risen Star. He too tries the synthetic surface for the first time.

Watch the weather and track conditions and also look toward Event Detail (15/1) at longer odds off his poor race in the Rebel Stakes last month. He did break his maiden going 1-mile at Turfway in January over this All Weather Track as the favorite. He'll sit off the pace looking to track down runners through faster fractions.

Pick: Congruent (5/1) and Event Detail (15/1)
