Kentucky Derby Prep Holy Bull Stakes 2023 Field, Odds and Picks

Updated:

The Gulfstream Championship Meet continues on Sat., Feb. 4 with a big day of racing that includes the $250,000 Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes for 3-year-olds. The top five finishers in the Holy Bull earn Kentucky Derby points (20-8-6-4-2) with the top 20 points leaders on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard earning a spot into the starting gate for the May 6 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

The Holy Bull is a notable Kentucky Derby prep race at Gulfstream Park on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. A number of horses are worth watching and wagering on as they try to earn points ahead of key Kentucky Derby Championship Series races -- the March 4 Fountain of Youth and April 1 Florida Derby.

With a good chance of rain showers in the forecast Saturday, be sure to monitor the weather and keep an eye on the track conditions. Top track announcer Pete Aiello calls the races from Gulfstream.

Holy Bull Pick

Despite Cyclone Mischief being the favorite, the trio of Rocket Can, Legacy Isle and Lord Miles are challengers and win contenders. Several horses exit the Mucho Macho Man Stakes, including disqualified winner Legacy Isle and hard-charging third-place finisher Lord Miles. Lord Miles has a rider change to the meet's top jockey (Irad Ortiz, Jr.) for not-so-respected leading trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr.

The pick to win is Rocket Can, who raced better before breaking his maiden over a sloppy surface at the end of October. He followed that up with a close second and improved speed in an Allowance race at this distance a month later at Churchill Downs. Rocket Can will sit mid-pack before making his move, and this son of super sire Into Mischief is ready to show off his improved training, strength and speed as a 3-year-old for the Pegasus World Cup winning jockey/trainer combo of Junior Alvarado and Bill Mott.

Pick: Rocket Can (7/2)
