Keeneland Horse Racing Picks for Saturday 4/22/23

Updated:

The three-week Keeneland Spring Meet continues on Saturday with 10 races and a post time of 1 p.m. ET.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, monitor the weather and keep an eye on the track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

Race 6 is a Maiden Special Weight for 3-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs. The numberFire data projects longshots Cartographer (20/1), Cigarette Boat (10/1) and De la Calles (15/1) to make a solid run to the wire as in-the-money finishers.

Cigarette Boat is ridden by the meet's leading jockey Tyler Gaffalione for EPO trainer Mike Maker. He's hit the board in 3-of-4 starts and improved his speed last race at Turfway Park as a 5/2 choice. Cartographer makes his debut with some top-speed works in place.

2. Red Knight and Highest Honors, Race 8

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/2 and 5/1

Race 8 is the $350,000 Grade 2 Elkorn Stakes for older horses at 1 1/2 miles on the turf. Trainer Mike Maker has the two favorites Red Knight (5/2) and Value Engineering (7/2) with top jockey Tyler Gaffalione riding.

The numberFire win contenders include Channel Maker (9/2) and Red Knight, who won his last three starts coming off a layoff. Guaranteed Tip Sheet includes him in exacta wagering along with top win contender Highest Honors (5/1), who has some strong work in place with top jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. riding for EPO trainer Chad Brown.

Channel Maker breaks from the rail with Jonny Velazquez riding for trainer Bill Mott. He has the most back class and would make easy work if he can find it again. Longshot Tiz the Bomb (30/1) on the outside 10 post had a much better pace in the first half mile last out.

3. Tawny Port and Skippylongstocking, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 8/1 and 7/5

Race 9 is the $300,000 Grade 3 Ben Ali Stakes for older horses at 1 3/16 miles. The numberFire projected order of finish is Skippylongstocking (7/5), Tawny Port (8/1) and Rattle N Roll (3/1).

Irad Ortiz, Jr. rides 'Skippy' for EPO trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. while Flavien Prat rides Tawny Port for EPO trainer Brad Cox. Tawny Port should be in peak form in his third start after a layoff, according to Guaranteed Tip Sheet. Rattle N Roll ran the highest last-race speed figure and could be better in the second start off the bench.

Pioneer of Medina (7/2) for trainer Todd Pletcher is another making the classic third start off the sidelines. Skippylongstocking hit triple digits on the speed gun in five of his last eight races.

Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.
