Keeneland Horse Racing Picks for Friday 10/14/22

Starting at 1:00 p.m. ET, we have 10 races Friday at Keeneland including a feature stakes race.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions).

According to numberFire horse racing projections, these are the best bets to make at FanDuel Racing today.

1. Lady Puchi and Aizu, Race 5

Race 5 is an Allowance race for fillies and mares going 1 mile on the turf. The numberFire data projects Lady Puchi (7/2) and Queen Judith (9/2) to decide the race for the winner.

Lady Puchi has just 1 win in 13 starts but has faced better runners in stakes company. A pair of runner-up finishes recently and her last race was a top 99 speed figure. Queen Judith breaks from far outside 12 post and has been off since June. Her 87 speed figure was a career best last race, and the meets leading jockey Florent Geroux rides.

Aizu (20/1) is a longshot sleeper with a 93 speed figure and better running than her recent finishes.

2. Boltoro and Callie's Grit, Race 7

Race 7 is a Maiden Special Weight for 2-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. The numberFire order of finish is Boltoro (9/2), Callie's Grit (3/1) and Stay Lost (8/1).

Boltoro is a well-bred filly who finished runner-up in her second start last month.

3. Mira Mission and Arklo, Race 9

Race 9 is the $300,000 Sycamore Stakes (G3) at 1 1/2 miles on the turf. The favorite Mira Mission (7/2) is the top pick according to numberFire's algorithm, just in front of Arklo (4/1) and Red Knight (6/1) in the 12-horse feature race.

Mira Mission has run some big races in recent months with a pair of runner-up finishes in Grade 1 stakes. Top jockey Joel Rosario rides Arklo for EPO trainer Brad Cox. The 8-year-old has $3 million in earnings and 18 top-2 finishes in 38 starts but no wins in his last six races.

Red Knight is another veteran runner who won this race in 2020. He's also won his last two starts ahead of this tougher challenge. Channel Maker (6/1) rounds out the single-digit odds contenders with more than $3.6 million in earnings. He won at this distance over the same track this spring, and top jockey Luis Saez will have him near the front trying to hold up again.
