Jake Haener Scouting Report
Haener committed to Washington out of high school but redshirted for one season and appeared in only four games as a backup in 2018. He decided to transfer to Fresno State as a result and sat out for one year due to NCAA regulations. Haener then earned the starting job and never looked back.
The California native played well across three college seasons as a Bulldog, completing 68.2% of his pass attempts for 9,013 passing yards and 67 touchdowns (17 interceptions). He garnered second-team All-Mountain West honors in 2021 and first-team All-Mountain West honors as a senior in 2022.
Highlighted strengths of Haener's game revolve around his accuracy. He throws with a quick and compacted release, which allows him to get the ball to his receivers with incredible timing. Haener has been praised for his ability to diagnose defensive schemes and make pre-snap adjustments, too.
Haener is not a prospect without flaws, though, as he lacks great mobility and can struggle throwing a consistent deep ball. He will need to overcome his size disparity to compete at the NFL level as well. Nevertheless, that is not something that has stopped him from exceeding expectations in the past.
Jake Haener NFL Draft Prediction
Haener is not a day-one starter, but he could develop into one down the road if surrounded by the right weapons and protection. He has the accuracy as well as the arm strength to serve as a capable backup right away and has the competitive toughness to keep his team in the mix if asked to come in.
As for which team is the best fit for Haener, the Rams stick out as a great landing spot considering current starter Matthew Stafford is the only quarterback under contract for LA. Head coach Sean McVay is an offensive-minded guy, too, which is never a bad thing for an evolving QB like Haener.
One thing to keep an eye on here is that the Rams have the No. 36 overall pick and Will Levis is still on the board after falling out of the first round. The front office may have a chance to address the QB spot right away, but it could opt to pass and take Haener with what is projected to cost a fifth-round pick.
Prediction: Los Angeles Rams (Round 5, 167th overall)
