Total: 34.5 — Over: (-112) | Under: (-108)

Iowa enters this contest as the -7.5 favorite on the spread and is better than a 3/1 favorite on the moneyline. This Saturday night kickoff also features the lowest total of the college football season at 34.5 points.

Iowa vs Rutgers Prediction & Pick

The Hawkeyes' offense is an eyesore and lacks production. Iowa won 7-3 over FCS South Dakota State and gained just 166 yards with 10 first downs. Then a 10-7 loss to state rival Iowa State followed and another dreadful offensive performance with 11 first downs and 150 yards of offense. A 27-0 win over lowly Nevada last week is nothing to get too excited about, despite the return of a trio of wide receivers. The quarterback play of Spencer Petras remains subpar with just a 48.1% completion rate this season and an average of 125.3 passing yards per game. Iowa's poor offense is offset by a remarkable defense allowing just 13 points in three games so far.

Rutgers is projected as the worst team in the Big Ten East division, but the Scarlet Knights have grinded their way to a pair of ugly wins. Project some improvement, but also keep an eye on the status of their quarterbacks to see which one starts.

Final Score Prediction: Rutgers: 17 | Iowa: 16

Iowa vs Rutgers Best Bet

When a college football team is favored by more than 6 points and fails to score at least 28 points, the underdog cashes against the spread a high percentage of the time. Bettors can't feel confident in Iowa's offense to score too much, and Rutgers is the preferred side to support.

Rutgers buried a weak FCS Wagner team 66-0. They also won a pair of close, low-scoring road games over Boston College and Temple. Highly-touted redshirt freshman QB Gavin Wimsatt is still finding his way, and last week the Knights turned to third-string sophomore Evan Simon after Wimsatt went down with an injury in the first half. Simon has 266 passing yards this season but managed just 52 passing yards on 15 attempts against Temple. The game plan was conservative after Wimsatt went down, and Simon did complete all 7 pass attempts under 10 yards. Both Wimsatt and Noah Vedral are game-time decisions, although Vedral has been out since training camp.

It's tough to feel too confident in Rutgers with their quarterback situation, so make sure to check back ahead of kickoff. Still, The Scarlet Knights are the preferred side at this price in a low-scoring game.

Bet: Rutgers +7.5 (-110)
