Insider Confirms Packers Fumbled Chase Claypool Trade Opportunity

Updated:

The Green Bay Packers were one of several teams interested in wideout Chase Claypool's services ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline. Ultimately, the Chicago Bears acquired the Canadian pass-catcher from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

However, it turns out that the Packers were deeper in the hunt than some expected.

NFL insider Josina Anderson reports that "Green Bay was potentially going to offer the best deal for Chase (Claypool)" as of 8 a.m. ET on Tuesday. Considering how the Bears acquired Claypool for a second-round back, it'd be interesting to see exactly what the Packers offered.

Green Bay Packers Rumors

Assuming that Anderson's sources are right, the Packers clearly fumbled the situation. It isn't often that 23-year-old wide receivers (who's still on his rookie deal) are openly available. A Chicago second-rounder might be more valuable than one from Green Bay, but the Packers surely could've added another pick to sweeten the deal.

Making matters worse is that Claypool is now with the rival Bears and gets to face the Packers in Week 13. Furthermore, he'll face Green Bay twice a year for as long as he stays in the Windy City, giving Packers fans plenty of chances to see what they missed out on.

Barring any last-minute deals, it looks like the Packers will stay with their current WR room. Though it isn't the worst wideout corps on paper, names like Allen Lazard and Christian Watson haven't excelled as hoped. Meanwhile, veterans like Sammy Watkins and Randall Cobb have had issues staying healthy.

The disastrous situation has led to quarterback Aaron Rodgers averaging just 225 passing yards per game — the worst clip of his career as a starter. His pleas for help have gone unanswered and there's only so much that the four-time NFL MVP can do on his own.

At the end of the day, not even a four-game losing skid was enough to motivate Packers management to trade for a wideout. Now, fans must hope that Rodgers and his untouched WR room can turn things around in a Week 9 tilt with the rival Detroit Lions.

Packers vs Lions Odds

Even with disappointing play from their WRs, the Packers are on track to end their losing streak in Week 9. FanDuel Sportsbook currently lists Green Bay as the 3.5-point road favorite over the Lions in a game with a projected total of 49.5 points.
