Steelers Legend Hines Ward Leaving Jets for New Coaching Gig

Updated:

Former NFL wide receiver Hines Ward spent the 2019 & 2020 seasons as a New York Jets offensive assistant, but it has been reported that he is leaving the team for a new coaching gig. In fact, he is getting out of the NFL completely and moving into college football.

Ward will become a part of Florida Atlantic's coaching staff and work with the wide receiving group. The FAU Owls went 5-4 last season and will look to bounce back in 2021 with head coach Willie Taggart leading the way for his second season.

Of course, Ward is most known for the major role he played on the Pittsburgh Steelers offense in the early 2000's. He had six 1,000-yard seasons and racked up over 12,000 receiving yards in his 14 NFL seasons. Ward made the Pro Bowl four times and was also a two-time Super Bowl Champion.

Ward joins newly promoted wide receivers coach Joey Thomas on the FAU staff. The Owls return six of their top seven pass catchers from last season, but need to improve as the team only had one player with more than 20 receptions on the year in 2020 (9 games played).

With the experience and knowledge Ward possesses about the game of football, he could impact a lot of young players looking to get to the next level. Keep an eye on the Owls' receiving core knowing an NFL legend is down on the sidelines helping them out.
