Here's What the Jose Abreu Signing Means for Yuli Gurriel's Future in Houston

Updated:

The Houston Astros made a big free agency splash on Monday, signing veteran first baseman Jose Abreu to a three-year deal. The former MVP brings a wealth of offense to Houston's first base position, one that had been dominated by Yuli Gurriel for the past seven seasons.

Abreu's signing likely means Gurriel -- who is also a free agent -- may have played his final game in Houston, although Astros insider Brian McTaggart doesn't believe so.

McTaggart explained that Houston still has interest in bringing Gurriel back for some type of "utility role." Primarily a first baseman, Gurriel has shown the ability to play third base, second base and occasionally shortstop in a pinch.

Gurriel was an important piece during the Astros' four World Series appearances and two titles since 2017, especially in 2022. After posting a career-worst .647 OPS during the regular season, the 38-year-old rebounded to hit .347 with an .850 OPS during Houston's championship run.
