Has Michigan State Ever Won a National Championship?

Updated:

March Madness and the Michigan State Spartans go hand in hand. After all, Michigan State hasn't missed an NCAA Tournament since 1997 and isn't showing any signs of slowing down this year with a Sweet 16 matchup just around the corner.

Despite the Spartans' past event history, they were far from favorites to win it all when this year's tournament began. March Madness is built on surprises, though, so it's never wise to count MSU out until the final whistle blows.

With that in mind, would this be the first time that Michigan State fans celebrate a national championship victory?

Michigan State National Championship History

Michigan State has won the NCAA men's basketball National Championship twice over the program's illustrious history. The first victory occurred against Indiana State in 1979 while the most recent took place in 2000 with a win against Florida.

Michigan State also finished as the runner-up in 2009. On top of that, the Spartans have made 14 Elite 8 appearances, most recently advancing past the Sweet 16 in 2019. Unfortunately, they went on to be eliminated by Texas Tech in the Final Four that year.

It's been 23 years since Michigan State last competed for a National Championship. The Spartans are clearly capable of proving their doubters wrong, but it remains to be seen if their title drought finally comes to an end.
