3 Greatest Quarterbacks in Bills History

3 Greatest Quarterbacks in Bills History

Updated:

The Buffalo Bills have had their struggles in the 2000's, but behind a terrific defense and the promising play of young quarterback Josh Allen, they look poised to make the jump in 2020.

The Bills don't have a reputation for stellar quarterback play throughout the years, but if Allen keeps developing, he certainly won't be the first star they've had under center.

Here's a look at the three greatest quarterbacks in Bills history.

Best Buffalo Bills QBs of All Time

3. Joe Ferguson (1973-1984)

Joe Ferguson has played more games (164) than any other quarterback in Bills history, and he put up some big numbers over that time. He ranks No. 2 in the team's history in both passing yards (27,590) and touchdowns (181), as well as QB wins (77). The Bills didn't win any championships under Ferguson, but he did bring the team to relevance in the post-merger NFL. The Bills won just 8 games combined in their first three NFL seasons, then Ferguson took over and won at least 8 in each of the next three years. He led the Bills to three playoff appearances, and even threw for an NFL-best 2,803 yards in 1977.

2. Jack Kemp (1962-1969)

Jack Kemp's stats need to be viewed in the lens of the era in which he played, because in a vacuum a 46.4 percent completion percentage is pretty brutal. He made the Pro Bowl six times in seven AFL seasons with the Bills, though, also earning first-team All-Pro honors in 1965. The Bills won two AFL championships with Kemp under center (1964, 1965).

1. Jim Kelly (1986-1996)

Though he's just second in games started, Kelly leads all Bills QBs in wins (101), yards (35,467) and touchdowns (237). His 84.4 passer rating is also No. 2 among all Bills passers with at least 700 attempts. Kelly may not have a Super Bowl ring to his name, but making four consecutive appearances is still an incredibly impressive feat, and the Bills ranked both top-seven in scoring and top-six in yards in the NFL for each season from 1989 to 1993.
