3 Free Agents the Dolphins Need to Sign to Win the AFC Next Season

The Miami Dolphins' 2022-23 postseason run ended as soon as it began. A 34-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills eliminated the Dolphins from the playoffs, marking Miami's 22nd consecutive campaign without a postseason win. While the team's quick exit could've been avoided had Tua Tagovailoa not suffered multiple concussions this season, it's also evident that other issues must be fixed.

If the Dolphins want to compete with teams like the Bills for the AFC's top spot in 2023, general manager Chris Grier must make some offseason improvements. Miami is currently around $9 million over the salary cap (Spotrac), meaning he'll likely need to get creative to bring in free-agent reinforcements.

In the meantime, here are three free agents that the Dolphins need to sign to win the AFC in 2023.

1. Kelvin Beachum, OT

As it stands, Terron Armstead and Austin Jackson are the only offensive tackles under contract for the Dolphins in 2023. Someone who they should consider bringing in his Kelvin Beachum. The veteran OT was solid in his third season with the Arizona Cardinals, allowing just five sacks on 1,178 snaps while recording a 70.6 overall Pro Football Focus grade along the way. He also brings versatility and a clean bill of health to the table, able to play both sides of the offensive line while also having missed only five games over the last six seasons. If the Dolphins want to give Tagovailoa (or whoever's under center) the best possible protection next year, they need to call Beachum's agent this offseason.

2. Raheem Mostert, RB

A journeyman for the majority of his career, Raheem Moster finally showed what he was capable of with the Dolphins in 2022. The 30-year-old veteran set career highs in carries (181) and rushing yards (891) with three touchdowns over 16 games, even turning 31 receptions into 202 yards and a pair of TDs. Miami likely won't be able to afford big-name running backs like Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley, which is why they must do what they can to re-sign Moster. He looked extremely capable and productive in the Dolphins' backfield, working as a great one-two punch with fellow RB Jeff Wilson Jr. Bringing the duo back — especially Mostert — is key to the Dolphins having a legitimate backfield next season, especially if they can beef up the o-line as well.

3. Tremon Smith, CB

Cornerback Tremon Smith is someone that can help improve a Miami secondary that surrendered 239.3 passing yards per game (fifth-most). Despite only starting two of the 17 games he played for the Houston Texans, the 26-year-old still had an impressive campaign. Smith racked up four broken-up passes, three forced fumbles and two interceptions on just 202 snaps. He also only allowed a 53.3% completion percentage and 51.4 pass rate when targeted, also only missing one tackle on 23 attempts. On top of that, Smith is also a solid punt and kick returner, which would help a Dolphins team that finished in the bottom two in return yards for both categories.
