First Drive Result Super Bowl Prop Bet History

There's no overlooking the recent trend of punts being the first drive result in the Super Bowl. Dating back to 2000, there have been 13 first drives that ended up with a punt. Only one touchdown was scored on an opening drive, and that came thanks to Devin Hester's opening kickoff return back in Super Bowl XLI (2007).

The other eight first drives resulted in four field goal attempts and four "other" results, mainly turnovers by the offense.

Targeting a punt is clearly the safest bet in this situation. We'll dive into the Bengals and Rams trends this season to back that up. Each team has played 20 respective games until this point of the season. Of those 40 combined first drives, the teams have punted 19 different times. A field goal attempt ranks second on this list, occurring in 10 of the 40 first drives.

The touchdown is the third most-likely option according to Bengals/Rams trends, happening in seven of these first drives, while "other" results happened four times. Interestingly enough, the Rams outpace Cincinnati in opening scores, putting up four of the seven combined TDs and seven of the 10 combined field goal attempts.

Sean McVay and his Rams offense likes to get off to quick starts, but it's hard to ignore the longer trends on this prop bet. You may want to play this one safe and go with the first drive resulting in a punt, but the -125 odds aren't worth the potential payout.

The field goal attempt odds at +440 are very enticing. Considering a field goal attempt happened in a fourth of the teams' combined opening drives, that's some serious value for a prop bet. Don't expect the quick TD (+330), but lay out some money on points going through those uprights.
