One of the biggest potential boxing matchups on the calendar for the remainder of 2022 is a welterweight title unification bout between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford. They're the clear two best welterweights on the planet, and they're both consensus top-five pound-for-pound right now. It might not be the big names that casual fans flock to, but this is probably the most high-level match that can be made in boxing at the moment.
The two still haven't put pen to paper, but reports are that they are on the verge of signing for an October title fight. Accordingly, FanDuel Sportsbook is on top of things and have updated their boxing odds to include the highly anticipated showdown.
Here's what you need to know about the fight.
Crawford vs Spence Date
The date from Crawford vs. Spence is far from official, but reports are that the fight is likely to land in October. It's probably safe to assume this fight will take place on a Saturday night, which narrows things down to five options: October 1, October 8, October 15, October 22, October 29.
Promoters may not want to compete with a high-profile UFC card, and with UFC 281 set to go down in Abu Dhabi on October 22, that date seems unlikely to be chosen for Crawford vs Spence.
Crawford vs Spence Odds
The Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr. opening odds on FanDuel Sportsbook have this fight at nearly a pick 'em. Crawford has opened as a slight -126 favorite, while Spence is a -102 underdog.
Crawford vs Spence Prediction
The highest ranked opponent either of these guys has faced recently is Spence taking on Yordenis Ugas. Neither has fought Keith Thurman, neither has fought Vergil Ortiz, neither has fought Cody Crowley. They've avoided most top welterweight competition to this point, but Ugas is a legit top-five opponent. And Spence won that fight easily. He was up 88-82, 88-83 and 88-82 on the scorecards before doctors called an end to the fight due to swelling on Ugas' right eye.
Is Crawford capable of a performance like that against such tough competition? Honestly, probably. But he really hasn't had to prove it, and that should give you some pause. This fight is absolutely a super close matchup, and it makes sense that the odds are floating around even. But for my money, if anyone is a slight favorite it should be Errol Spence to win.
