The 2022 FIFA World Cup rolls on with the quarterfinal round kicking off this weekend. One of the most exciting matchups of this stage pits European rivals England and France against one another with a trip to the semis on the line.

These two storied nations have some history with each other in the World Cup. Here's everything you need to know about this rivalry before they square off on Saturday, Dec. 10.

England vs France World Cup History

This year isn't the first time England and France will face each other at the FIFA World Cup. However, it's been four decades since their last meeting.

These sides first played each other in the World Cup in 1966. England emerged victorious from that group stage faceoff, winning 2-0 thanks to two goals from forward Roger Hunt. That loss officially eliminated France from the tournament, while England went on to win the title.

The 1982 WC then set the stage for a highly anticipated rematch. The Three Lions once again got the best of Les Bleus, winning 3-1 in their group battle. Both teams advanced from that stage, and France went on to take fourth place, while England was sent home in the second group round.

England vs France All-Time Record in Soccer

This rivalry has gone overwhelmingly in England's favor so far. The Three Lions are 17-5-9 (W-D-L) all-time against Les Bleus, including their 2-0-0 record versus France in the World Cup.

France has made some headway as of late, though. Les Bleus are 4-1-1 in their last six meetings with the Three Lions. France won the last clash between these sides -- an international friendly on June 13, 2017 -- by a score of 3-2.
