The Miami Dolphins cannot catch a break at the quarterback position. Both Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater remain in concussion protocol with a matchup against the Minnesota Vikings set for Week 6. Head coach Mike McDaniel has shed some light on Tagovailoa's possible return timeline.
Tua Tagovailoa Injury News
McDaniel explained that the focus remains on getting Tagovailoa "as healthy as possible" and that he hasn't even thought about what a return timeline would look like. The 24-year-old is being evaluated every 12-24 hours, but has yet to assume any kind of football activity. That is the next hurdle to cross.
The good news is that Tagovailoa is in the Dolphins' facility almost every day, so he is able to spend time with his teammates and coaching staff. The Alabama product had led Miami to a 3-1 record and completed 69.6% of his passes for 1,035 yards and 8 touchdowns (3 interceptions) before his injury.
The controversy surrounding Tagovailoa's injury in Week 4 caused a change to be made in the NFL concussion protocol moving forward. Under the new rules, no player will be able to compete if they are experiencing ataxia, which is described as a lack of coordination caused by poor muscle control.
Those new rules are what kept Bridgewater from returning in Miami's Week 5 loss to the New York Jets. McDaniel said the veteran QB has no symptoms of a concussion, but is staying in the protocol for now. Concrete details on his status for Sunday should be released over the next few days.
The Dolphins are slated as a 3-point home underdog against the Vikings, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
