Dark Horse Picks to Win PGA 2023 Zurich Classic on FanDuel Sportsbook

Updated:

The PGA Tour heads to New Orleans for the sixth edition of the two-man team event at the Zurich Classic. The purse has increased, and each winner on the team receives $1.5M plus an invitation to the 2023 PGA Championship and the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and Players Championship.

TPC Louisiana is a 7,425-yard, Par 72 course and Pete Dye design. It stretches over 250 acres of wetlands along the Mississippi River delta and includes more than 100 bunkers and 5 ponds, which come into play.

Team Format Rules:

  • Rounds 1 and 3 are Four-Ball (Best-Ball)
  • Rounds 2 and 4 are Foursomes (Alternate Shot)

For the Four-Ball play, the players on each team will play their ball throughout the entirety of the round. The best score between the two players is recorded.

During Foursomes play, players will rotate tee shots. One player will hit the tee shots on all the odd-numbered holes, and the other will hit the tee shot on even-numbered holes. The total strokes taken will result in the team’s score for that hole.

Making the Cut: The low 33 teams and ties following Round 2 continue to play into the weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

Following wins by dark horse picks Max Homa in the Farmers Insurance Open, Adam Svensson in the RSM Classic, and Matt Fitzpatrick in the RBC Heritage, there are opportunities to cash in on other players behind the leading favorites. That includes for a top-10 or top-20 finish like dark horse Jason Day at The Player Championship and Xander Schauffele at The Masters.

Zurich Classic Dark Horse Picks 2023

Beyond the heavy favorites of team Patrick Cantaly and Xander Schauffele (+290), there are plenty of capable longshots and dark horses that could make a run at the leaderboard and come away with a higher finish or victory on Sunday. After all, did you see Kurt Kitayama win the Arnold Palmer Invitational at 220/1 odds or greater?

1. Sungjae Im and Keith Mitchell (+1300)

Mitchell and Im lead the field in Birdies or Better Gained, and since very low scores are required to win (-20 under par or better has won every year), they are a threat. Mitchell's Ball Striking and Tee-to-Green game is solid and Im's is even better. Both possess top-tier Off-the-Tee stats and Sungjae Im's Around the Green game is top-tier and adds the birdie-in-bunches profile.

2. Sam Burns and Billy Horschel (+2100)

Nearly all of the teams may be considered a dark horse with the top team and defending champions Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele returning and in top form off both The Masters and last week's top-5 finish at Harbour Town and the RBC Classic. But Sam Burns and Billy Horschel have both had multiple top-10 finishes at the Zurich Classic since 2017 and are clearly capable of making the shots for a run at the title.

3. Joel Dahmen and Denny McCarthy (+4600)

Dahmen and McCarthy rank top-10 in this field in Strokes Gained: Total. Dahmen's Approach play has been better in his last three events but his putting has been putrid. That's where the mix-and-match team play works well as McCarthy's Short Game and Putting is top-tier.
