Dark Horse Picks to Win PGA 2023 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow on FanDuel Sportsbook

Updated:

Following the two favorites' first and second-place finish with Tony Finau over Jon Rahm in the Mexico Open, the top PGA Tour pros head to Quail Hollow Golf Club for the $20 million Elevated Event at the Wells Fargo Championship. Unfortunately, world No. 1 Jon Rahm is skipping the event,  along with No. 2 Scottie Scheffler, But 21 of the top 30 in the Official World Golf Rankings are playing, including favorite and 3-time Wells Fargo Championship winner Rory McIlroy, who leads the Tour in driving distance.

Golfers are tested in total driving, long iron approaches, and the ability to consistently scramble for pars on Poa greens with Bermuda base turf.

Following wins by dark horse picks Max Homa in the Farmers Insurance Open, Adam Svensson in the RSM Classic, and Matt Fitzpatrick in the RBC Heritage, there are opportunities to cash in on other players behind the leading favorites. That includes for a top-10 or top-20 finish like dark horse Jason Day at The Players Championship, Xander Schauffele at The Masters and Patrick Rodgers for a better than 3/1 return at the Mexico Open.

Wells Fargo Championship Dark Horse Picks 2023

Beyond the favorites, there are plenty of capable longshots and dark horses that could make a run at the leaderboard and come away with a higher finish or victory on Sunday. After all, did you see Kurt Kitayama win the Arnold Palmer Invitational at 220/1 odds or greater?

Check out the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship odds to win along with finishing position odds, tournament matchups and golf props on FanDuel Sportsbook.

1. Viktor Hovland (+2100)

Hovland is a major contender at Quail Hollow, where he finished T-3 on debut in 2021 shooting 8-under par with a strong weekend. Hovland is among the best in this field combining Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green, Ball Striking and Off-the-Tee stats, and ranks No. 1 and No. 2 over his last 24 rounds in the latter two categories. In fact, the 25-year-old 3-time PGA Tour winner is the only player in this field to rank top-20 in SG: Ball Striking, OTT, Approach, Driving Distance, and Proximity to the hole from 200+ yards. His short game stumbles and putting can be an issue, yet Viktor cashed-in top-10 finishes the last two months at the Arnold Palmer Inv, Players Championship, and The Masters.

2. Cameron Young (+2100)

Cameron Young has the same odds as Hovland, and he also had a top finish on debut when he T-2 last year at the Wells Fargo Championship. That event was not held at Quail Hollow, however, but Young still fits the profile combining longer, more difficult courses with top-5 driving distance on Tour averaging 316 yards off the tee. His 2nd place finish at the WGC and 7th at the Masters showcased last year's PGA Tour Rookie of the Year's strengths. That is despite his sub-par Putting and Around-the-Green stats.

3. Keith Mitchell (+7000)

We've been on Tommy Fleetwood plenty on these pages, and he's a legit longshot to include at +5500. But down the betting board further is Keith Mitchell, who had a 2-shot lead into Sunday playing in the final group at this course in 2021 with Rory McIlroy. Although, the big-hitting 31-year-old stumbled to a Sunday 72 and T-3 finish. Mitchell also tied for 8th here in 2019, and we expect him to move into the top 50 of the world golf rankings after a strong week at Quail Hollow. Clearly, Mitchell is one of the best value plays on the board this week. He's among the longest hitters on Tour off the tee (310 yards), is playing better now, and had elite stats across the board on this course in 2021, other than Around-the-Green, which cost him a victory. A top-10 finish at better than 6/1 odds is in play along with top-20 at 3/1 for another potential longshot winner.
