3 Dark Horse Picks to Win the 2023 Kentucky Derby

Updated:

It's time to bet the 2023 Kentucky Derby, which should have good weather and a fast track in Louisville on Saturday. The May 6 Run for the Roses is filled with a number of leading contenders and longshots to fill out a wide open race.

Unfortunately, more horses have scratched this week including leading contender Practical Move and a potential dark horse pick in Skinner.

As you consider your wagering strategy and types of bets with Win-Place-Show, along with Exacta, Trifecta and Superfecta bets, here are some longshots and dark horses to add to your Derby betting portfolio who are capable of winning the 149th Kentucky Derby.

1. Derma Sotogake (10/1)

This Japanese runner is a legit win contender at value odds. Derma Sotogake won the UAE Derby, and naysayers point to the 0-for-19 record of UAE Derby runners who have entered the Kentucky Derby. This colt has major speed, a super stride, and classic breeding to break through in America's biggest horse race at Churchill Downs.

2. Two Phil's (12/1)

Two Phil's should be among the pace pressers, and in position to make a strong push in the stretch and Run for the Roses. He won a stakes race over this track in October, and was most impressive in winning his last Derby prep in the Jeff Ruby Steaks - the same race that last year's Kentucky Derby huge longshot and dark horse winner Rich Strike came out of before capturing Kentucky Derby glory.

3. Kingsbarns (12-1)

Kingsbarns comes into the Kentucky Derby undefeated. He is 3-for-3 after his front-running win in the Louisiana Derby. The lightly-raced Todd Pletcher-trained colt may lack some foundation, but he too will have your hopes high as one of the leaders turning for home and bred to get the Classic 1 1/4 mile distance.
