3 Cubs Most Likely to Be Dealt at the Trade Deadline

Success has alluded the Chicago Cubs for the majority of the 2022 MLB season, resulting in a forgettable 25-41record after 65 games. The Cubs are now 12 games back of the NL Central lead and although there are plenty of games to play, little suggests that they have it in them to turn things around.

Assuming things continue down this path, the Cubs will likely be sellers once the MLB trade deadline rolls around. They have attractive veterans that could yield a decent return, which should help them be more competitive in 2023 and beyond.

The MLB trade deadline is August 2, and these three Cubs are the most likely to be moved before the first week in August.

Cubs Trade Rumors

1. Andrelton Simmons, SS

After signing a one-year, $4 million deal this past offseason, Simmons' stay with the Cubs hasn't gone as planned. The 32-year-old shortstop is batting .200 with seven RBIs without a home run in 20 games (60 at-bats), likely leading to Chicago wanting to part ways before he walks for nothing as a free agent. Despite his struggles in the box, the four-time Gold Glove winner is still a great defender, boasting a .981 fielding percentage at shortstop. Defense wins championships and if a contender needs to get more stops in the middle of their infield, Simmons should be a top priority.

2. David Robertson, CP

Through this dark season, closing pitcher David Robertson has been one of the bright spots for Cubs fans. The 37-year-old is 8-of-10 when it comes to save attempts in 2022, racking up a 1.82 ERA with 12.4 strikes per nine innings in 22 appearances. Being a free agent at the end of the season, Robertson should attract a lot of attention as a potential rental target. Besides being a former MLB All-Star, he also brings a 2009 World Series ring into the equation. While that championship was won well over a decade ago, it doesn't change the fact that he has the experience that championship-quality teams look for at the deadline.

3. Ian Happ, OF/IF

Any team looking to add a versatile bat to their lineup might call the Cubs regarding Ian Happ. The former 2015 first-round pick has played every position except shortstop and catcher during his MLB career, which is the type of versatility needed as injuries begin to pile up. Happ also brings some decent offense to the table as he's batting a career-high .284 in 2022, smashing seven HRs while picking up 31 RBIs in 64 games (218 ABs). If that doesn't make him attractive enough, Happ is also eligible for arbitration in 2023, giving any interested team some extra flexibility next year.
