Corey Seager Reveals His Choice for HR Derby Pitcher

Updated:

This won't be Corey Seager's first time participating in the MLB Home Run Derby. Seager competed in the event back in 2016, where he was knocked out in the first round by Mark Trumbo. With hopes to advance further into this year's bracket, Seager made a special choice as his designated pitcher in the event.

Seager revealed his father, Jeff, will throw to him this season. Jeff also threw to Corey back in 2016 when the event was held in San Diego. According to Corey, his father started the event rather nervous but "locked in" as the first round went on.

Corey detailed a heart-warming story about asking Jeff to initially participate. According to ESPN's Buster Olney, Corey did not receive an immediate "yes" to his request. Instead, Jeff drove to their nearby high school field to test out his arm.

The arm was apparently ready to go and Jeff called Corey back to confirm his participation in this family affair. Of course, this will be a fun homecoming for Corey and the Seagers. The two-time All-Star and former Rookie of the Year spent the first seven years of his eight-year MLB career with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 2022 MLB HR Derby will kick off at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN as Seager faces Seattle's Julio Rodriguez. He has odds set at +140 to advance and odds set at +1000 to be the last one standing, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
