The Kansas City Chiefs had seemingly forced the Indianapolis Colts to punt the football in the fourth quarter of a close Week 3 game before defensive tackle Chris Jones received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that extended the drive. Concerning details are have since emerged about the call.

Kansas City Chiefs News

A postgame report from referee Shawn Smith explained that Jones used "disturbing language" after he sacked quarterback Matt Ryan. As for what exactly was said, that was not revealed. Jones was asked about the penalty after the score went final, but he also opted not to disclose what he said.

This development does bring a bit more clarity to the situation as no one besides the players on the field at the time and the refs had any idea why a penalty was being called. It frustrated a lot of fans and coaches once the Colts marched down the field and scored the game-winning touchdown.

What this development doesn't make clear is where the line is drawn in terms of smack talk between players. Leaving out information on how Jones crossed that line makes it seem as if what he said was either so nasty that no one wants to repeat it or not nearly bad enough to draw a flag in the first place.

Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy said that if every instance of "abusive language" drew a flag, then the games would never end. Taunting has been a topic of discussion in the NFL for years and this specific call altered the outcome of a crucial game, so don't expect people to forget about it anytime soon.

The Chiefs will try to bounce back from their surprising loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4, where Kansas City is a slight 1.5-point road favorite on FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds. Due to Hurricane Ian, however, the game may be moved to a neutral site.
