Churchill Downs Horse Racing Picks Including the Pat Day Mile for Saturday 5/6/23

It's Kentucky Derby Day at the Churchill Downs Spring Meet. Nine big stakes races on Saturday are headlined by the 2023 Kentucky Derby, which is expected to have record wagering and all day mobile betting. The first stakes race starts in Race 4 at 12:04 p.m. ET with Race 12 and the Kentucky Derby at 6:57 p.m. ET.

Race 7 is the $500,000 Twin Spires Turf Sprint at 5 1/2 furlongs. The top win contender according to numberFire and GTS is Arrest Me Red (4/1). And Nothing Better (5/1), Motorious (8/1) along with Big Invasion (7/2) are top challengers. Arrest Me Red has a lot of early speed, and makes a strong mid move with top jockey Irad Ortiz, riding. Nothing Better can pilot or copilot while many of the other frontrunner types are more lead dependent. He should be close to the pace with jockey Manny Franco up. Motorious ships in from Santa Anita fresh off the highest last race speed figure. He’s upped his output in four straight races and has been training well for today.

2. Kangaroo Court and Gun Pilot, Race 8

Race is the $500,000 Grade 2 Pat Day Mile for 3-year-olds. The Guaranteed Tip Sheet picks include Kangaroo Court (8/1), Gun Pilot (5/1) and Echo Again (7/2) with Fort Bragg (7/2) capable as a wild card, according to GTS and numberFire. Kangaroo Court is just a half-length from being undefeated in four career races. Gun Pilot hit the board in 4-of-4 on a fast track with two wins and two seconds, and numberFire projects another top finish. Echo Again appears to have the talent to run in the Kentucky Derby but is inconsistent as can be.

3. Carl Spackler and Major Dude, Race 9

Race 9 is the $500,000 Grade 2 American Turf for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles. Guaranteed Tip Sheet has three main win contenders in Carl Spackler (3/1), Major Dude (5/2), and Far Bridge (7/2). Carl Spackler is an Irish Bred and Jose Ortiz rides for trainer Chad Brown. He's a head away from being unbeaten in two including the highest last race speed figure. Major Dude is a numberFire top win pick who doesn’t have to answer the distance or surface questions and he won both his outings at the distance and surface. Far Bridge is unbeaten in both of his races including his debut versus Carl Spackler and can close again from off the pace, Mo Stash (10/1) is capable of hitting the board, according to numberFire's data.
