Chiefs' Opponent for Germany Game Potentially Leaked

The Kansas City Chiefs are currently basking in the glory of another Super Bowl win, but that doesn't mean it's too early to think about the upcoming season. During the Chiefs' title defense in 2023, the team is set to go international as they host a game in Germany.

The opponent for that contest isn't known yet, but it potentially may have been revealed ahead of schedule.

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Lions president Rod Wood said there is an "at least 50-50" chance his team faces Kansas City in Germany. Wood made it clear he's not against the idea, and he knows this pairing would likely benefit the Chiefs, too.

"They get to protect a certain number, too, so I think they wouldn't want to have a division game over there. They probably would rather play Cincinnati at home, Buffalo at home."

The Lions are the obvious candidate here given their long absence from international play. Detroit last played overseas was in 2015, which was actually against KC in London (the Chiefs won 45-10).

Facing the Lions in Germany also allows Kansas City to retain home-field advantage against AFC rivals like the Cincinnati Bengals and the Buffalo Bills during the 2023 season. Facing these teams on neutral ground would be a vastly different experience than at Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs fans may have to wait until the NFL's official schedule release on May 12 to find out if Detroit is chosen as KC's Germany opponent.
