Broncos Reveal Starting Running Back After Chase Edmonds Trade

The Denver Broncos' backfield, like their offense in general, has been a mess this season. Second-year pro Javonte Williams appeared to be emerging as Denver's RB1 before tearing his ACL in Week 4, leaving veterans Melvin Gordon III and Latavius Murray to handle backfield duties. Now the Broncos' RB situation is even more complicated following the trade for Chase Edmonds from the Miami Dolphins.

With Edmonds added to the mix, Denver has since provided clarity on who will lead the running back room going forward.

According to Broncos general manager George Paton, Gordon will remain the team's starting running back for now.

While Gordon's performance has been underwhelming this year and he struggled with ball security earlier in the season, keeping him at RB1 makes sense from a consistency standpoint. He's been with Denver the longest (since 2020), whereas Murray and Edmonds were both in-season pickups.

Gordon will have to step it up if he wants to keep the role for long, however. He's averaging the fewest rushing yards per game of his career (32.9) and has twice as many fumbles (4) as touchdowns (2).

The Broncos are off this week, so they'll have some time to integrate Edmonds into their offense. They'll return in Week 10 to face the Tennessee Titans in Nashville, where Denver is currently listed as a 1.5-point road underdog on FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds.
