Broncos News: Russell Wilson Has Sky-High Asking Price for Next Contract Extension

Updated:

The Denver Broncos traded for Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson this offseason fully knowing he's due for a new contract soon. With the impending sale of the team approaching, one of the new owner's first priorities will be negotiating a potential extension with the Super Bowl winner.

Ahead of possible talks, it's been revealed Wilson has a sky-high asking price for his next deal.

Mike Klis of Denver's 9NEWS reports Wilson has set "five years, $250 million" as his asking price for an extension. Wilson is in the penultimate year of a four-year $140 million extension he signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019, which made him the highest-paid QB at the time.

The quarterback market has exploded since then, as Wilson's $35 million average annual value (AAV) for that deal now ranks No. 8 in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers headlined the offseason for QB contracts, signing an extension with the Green Bay Packers worth a league-leading $50.3 million AAV.

Shelling out $50 million per season for an aging quarterback is a legitimately concerning proposition. Wilson would be 35 years old by the time his new deal would kick in, and the Broncos would be on the hook for the next five seasons at that point.

Wilson is also coming off of a down 2021 campaign. And while he's an annual Pro Bowler, he hasn't produced to similar levels of Rodgers, a four-time league MVP. Even the likes of Patrick Mahomes ($45 million AAV) and Josh Allen ($43 million) aren't getting the money that Wilson is looking for.

Perhaps the Broncos and Wilson can compromise on a deal that not only pays the Super Bowl winner fairly, but gives the team room to build a contender around him as he ages.
