Braves GM Reveals Plans Around Kenley Jansen Free Agency

Updated:

The Atlanta Braves 2022 season ended much sooner than they or their fans had anticipated. The defending champions were eliminated by the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS after winning the 101 games and the NL East division title.

Now, Atlanta heads into the offseason with plenty of question marks surrounding their potential roster for 2023. One of the biggest is around the team's closer role and more specifically Kenley Jansen's free agency.

The Braves signed Jansen to a one-year deal away from the Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason and after a solid year that saw him grab 41 saves and record a 3.38 ERA, Atlanta's GM Alex Anthopoulos "would love to have him back" in Atlanta.

Finding a reliable closer is one of the toughest and most important jobs in building a successful team, especially when it comes to postseason play.

Jansen is already 35 years old and coming off a great season, you'd expect him to be seeking a multi-year extension. It remains to be seen how the Braves feel about that or if the two sides can be on the same page when it comes time to negotiate.

Atlanta has built a reputation of not exactly handing out the most player-friendly contracts, for better or for worse. Only time will tell how this all plays out, but regardless, it should be a busy and interesting offseason in Atlanta.
