Braves Get Concerning Spencer Strider Injury Update

The Atlanta Braves have reduced their magic number for an MLB playoffs spot to just two after Monday's win. That means rookie phenom Spencer Strider could've been on the mound on Wednesday to potentially help this team officially punch its postseason ticket.

Instead, the Braves have received some concerning news on Strider's health.

Strider has an oblique injury that will force him to sit for series finale against the Washington Nationals. It's just soreness on his left side that won't require an IL stint for now, which is an encouraging sign of a quick recovery.

Still, the dominant starter nursing a potential injury heading into the playoffs is far from ideal. Strider's breakout 2022 campaign has been a huge part of the Braves avoiding a World Series hangover. He's gone 11-5 over 31 starts, recording a 2.67 ERA and 202 strikeouts across 131.2 innings.

Bryce Elder will take Strider's spot in the rotation on Wednesday while the rookie gets some much-needed rest. He's still expected to play catch in the coming days, so it sounds like his return should be sooner rather than later.

Strider remains the frontrunner in the NL Rookie of the Year race with -140 odds, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. His absence leaves the door open for teammate Michael Harris (-105) to make up some ground. Thanks in part to those two studs, the Braves own the fifth-best World Series odds at +850.
